A Librarian's Code of Ethics

The librarian has a special obligation to ensure the free flow of information and ideas to present and future generations.

1. Provide the highest level of services to all library users and information seekers, by treating all individuals with respect and courtesy.

2. Protect the confidentiality and privacy of library users and information seekers.

3. Respect the intellectual freedom of library users through equal, open and nondiscriminatory access to information.

4. Respect intellectual property or other proprietary interests.

5. Pursue continuing education to improve professional skills.

6. Advance the interest of the library user and information seeker over the interest of the librarian.

7. Improve the system or process of the organization.
