Information Specialist = the school librarian uses resources, including technology tools, to help teachers develop authentic learning tasks for the students.

Program Administrator/ Leader = knowing and aligning the curriculum with the resources available to students and teachers to working with teachers on the development of inquiry-based lessons.  The school librarian works with the teachers to make certain there is vertical alignment of the units and the students are not repeating the same content over the course of several years.

 

Curriculum Mapping 

• Teachers list the sequence of their units for the year - begin by simply conversing with teachers to gain curriculum information and start the process.

• Begin to determine if there is any curriculum duplication between grade levels or if there are favorite topics that teachers are presenting that do not align with the district, state, and national standards.

• With the creation of curriculum maps, it becomes clear which topics are being presented at which times and which topics are teachers’ “favorites” but not aligned with the grade level standards. When this process is completed, the school librarian can share the draft of the maps with teachers and administrators and involve them in refining and editing them.

 

Library Collection Mapping

• To see what resources are currently available.

• A visual snapshot of the materials in the collection.

• Complete this work and then share it with teachers and administrators as a vehicle to involve them in connecting collection development to curriculum mapping

• Should include all resources that provide information: books, AV materials, technology resources including DVDs, E-books, electronic databases, and other items that may have become part of the collection through the years.

• Team with school colleagues to determine if the resources in the collection are aligned with the curriculum mapping information that has been developed.
